Titans stamp out Firebirds in CCIW opener
On Saturday, September 23, Illinois Wesleyan’s women’s soccer team defeated Carthage College in a blowout 4-0 victory on the road. The win helped the Titans improve to a 1-0 record in the CCIW and 3-1-2 total.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Borg was honored by being named CCIW Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in the game against Carthage, as well as her shutout against Albion College on September 20. In the two games, Borg tallied three saves on 17 shots with zero goals allowed.
IWU outshot Carthage 30-7 in their win, scoring on four of their attempts. Fifth year midfielder Caelyn Steffens contributed seven shots, five of which were on goal, to the Titan’s total.
Steffens scored three of Wesleyan’s four goals in their win with a commanding hattrick performance.
The Titans’ other goal came from senior forward Lauren Shanks just over ten minutes into the contest. Shanks also had seven shots, with two of them going on goal.
Green and White trounce Big Blue at home
The women’s soccer team stayed hot on Wednesday, September 28 in a 6-0 win over Millikin. The victory made the titans 2-0 in the CCIW in their conference home-opener.
Goalkeeper Kayla Borg continued to impress saving the only shot-on-goal that the Big Blue could produce. The entire Titans’ defense was a force to be reckoned with on Wednesday, only allowing two total shots throughout the full game.
Caelyn Steffens continued to dominate on the offensive end with five shots, all of which were on goal, resulting in two scores for the Titans. She also tallied one assist on the day.
It was sophomore midfielder Liza Matimore who really stole the show. Matimore took 11 shots that earned her a trio of goals. She also had an assist during the game.
Sophomore defender Amanda Yaeger scored IWU’s final goal of the day in the closing minutes of the game. It was Yaeger’s first career goal as a Titan.
The women’s soccer team looks to stay undefeated in the CCIW against Wheaton College on Saturday, October 1.
