Women’s Basketball wins Midwest Challenge
In the twenty-ninth annual Midwest Challenge, IWU won both of their games to win the tournament for the sixth time in school history.
Wesleyan started the tournament in a matchup against DePauw. The Titans handed the Tigers a 71-58 loss.
Led by their dominant play down low, IWU overcame poor shooting from beyond the arc to dominate DePauw. The Titans shot 2-10 from three compared to the Tigers’ 6-18.
The Green and White scored 50 of their 71 points in the paint. With seven points coming from free throws, the Titans made only six field goals outside of the paint.
IWU’s play inside led to a commanding 46.3 field goal percentage over the 38.7 percentage from DePauw.
Sophomore guard Kate Palmer led IWU with 19 points. Palmer also posted an impressive seven rebounds. Fellow sophomore guard Lauren Huber added 16 points and eight more rebounds for the Titans.
Junior and senior forwards Caite Knutson and Katelyn Heller scored 17 and 14 points, respectively, aiding IWU in their offensive effort. Heller had the Titans’ only block in the contest.
Wesleyan continued their strong play in a 15-point blowout win against Washington University in St. Louis in the championship game of the tournament. The Titans beat the Bears 67-52 in a solid defensive outing. A testament to IWU’s defense was their 19 points scored off of 25 forced turnovers.
Lauren Huber had a season-high 31 points. Huber earned a double-double in the game with a team-high 12 rebounds as well, carrying the Titans to a W.
Wesleyan annihilates Elmhurst
In their CCIW opener, IWU clobbered Elmhurst 100-58. The Titans snapped their streak of poor three-point shooting and shot 12-29 on their home court.
Wesleyan scored 54 of their 100 points in the paint, staying true to the tall-ball they’ve played all season. The Titans dominated the boards as well, earning 42 rebounds. 15 of those rebounds were on the offensive side of the ball and resulted in 19 second chance points for the Green and White.
Lauren Huber once again led the Titans with 22 points. Huber was lights out from the field and shot 9-11 in the game. Her shooting aided the Titans to finish with a 48.8 field goal percentage.
Caite Knutson shot 6-7 from the field and earned 14 points. Sophomore guard Mallory Powers also had 14 points in the game.
The Titans enter the weekend of Dec. 2 with a record of 6-2 (1-0) in the CCIW. They look to continue their five game win streak on Dec. 3 in a matchup with Carroll.
