Campus Activities Board (CAB) held its annual “Pizza Taste” event on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Students enjoyed free pizza from several pizza restaurants from the Bloomington-Normal area. DP Dough, Flingers Pizza Pub, Monical’s Pizza, Firehouse Pizza and Tobin’s Pizza all lent their food to the event.
“My favorite pizza was from Tobin’s, but I do wish IWU would give us Papa John’s even if it’s not locally owned” senior Tori Olomon said.
The event took place outdoors on the Eckley and Main Quads in order to allow for the event to happen in a socially-distanced fashion. Students were each given three paper tickets, one paper ticket for one piece of pizza.
All five of the pizza restaurants provided “pizza,” although they were all in different forms. DP Dough provided calzones. Both Firehouse Pizza and Tobin’s Pizza gave out classic triangle-shaped slices of pizza. Monical’s Pizza had small square-cut pieces of pizza, while Flingers Pizza Pub showed off their “Flinger Rolls”, their breadstick-esque version of the calzone. Several of the pizza restaurants, including Monical’s Pizza had a gluten-free option available.
“I think the pizza taste event was done really well this year,” senior Hannah Cunningham said.
“I liked that it was outside because there was a lot more space for everyone attending though I think I liked it more overall than I did when it was inside,” Cunningham said.
In the past, more tickets were given to students and according to Cunningham, the new limit made each pizza-goer’s choices more important, noting that the limit felt uncalled for.
“My least favorite has been DP Dough for the last two years, I didn’t even want to waste a ticket on it this year,” Cunningham said.
After students received their chosen pizza pieces, they were given free “All In For Wesleyan” t-shirts, from the yearly scholarship fundraiser that occurred in April. Students were also encouraged to fill out a feedback form about the Pizza Taste event for CAB. The form asked students how they thought the Pizza Taste went, what they would do to improve it, whether they would want it to happen again next year, as well as other questions. All students who attended the Pizza Taste event, by checking in with a CAB representative, were entered into a raffle. 10 winners, to be chosen at random, will win free CAB merchandise.
The event also served as the announcement of the 2020 Homecoming king and queen winners. The nominees for homecoming queen were Ely Cortez, Lauryn Lingad, Lety Hernandez, Aly Mirasol, Anna Mitroszewska, AJ Monken and Ria Patel and the nominees for homecoming king were Janaid Ali, Michael Good and Taylor Robinson.
“The weather was perfect to have the event outside and I think it was better that way. I wish they had better microphone quality when they were announcing the Homecoming court though,” Olomon said.
According to many attendees, CAB was ultimately successful in their attempt to uphold a “cheesy” tradition in the middle of a pandemic.
