Kaylee’s Korner: why division III athletics rock

Division III athletics may not be the most popular section of the NCAA, but it is the biggest.

There are 44 voting conferences in Division III athletics. They hold 431 Division III schools respectively. 40% of athletes in the NCAA are part of Division III athletics. What makes it a popular choice for those who want to continue their sport at a collegiate level?

With a schedule that is not as overloaded with practice, these athletes can devote more time to their studies. Most Division III institutions are smaller, which means smaller class sizes and a more focused education. Athletics are not put above a student’s ability to focus on their education to build a better future career for themselves.

Athletes can also devote more time to other extracurricular activities, such as joining Greek life, clubs associated with their interests or their majors, or perhaps joining campus efforts like their student senate or school newspaper. Getting the opportunity to be involved and hold leadership positions in these activities looks good on a resume for the future.

A negative point someone may raise is that Division III athletes receive no scholarships based on athletics because it is not an allowed practice per the NCAA. However, this could be a positive to a student athlete’s college experience because their financial aid does not depend on whether they can participate in their sport. Being held to the same standards as the other students on campus ensures the same benefits for athletes.

Being a student in a Division III school, such as Illinois Wesleyan, makes you an advanced athlete, a better student, and a well-rounded community member.
