IWU men’s soccer stops losing streak vs Augustana

Titans defeated by Wheaton at home

Illinois Wesleyan’s men’s soccer team lost 2-1 against the Wheaton Thunder on Saturday, October 1. That made five straight games without a win.

Despite the tremendous efforts from first-year goalkeeper Sam Kedzior, Wheaton was able to score twice on 11 shots on goal. Kedzior earned eight saves in the loss.

Wesleyan was only able to put two shots on goal, both by junior forward Gavin Smith. Smith came off the bench and scored one of his two shots, the only score for IWU in the game. Smith was assisted by sophomore midfielder Trey Bixby, his first assist as a Titan.

Soccer stops skid from reaching six games

IWU earned a much-needed win after going 0-4-1 in their last five games. On Wednesday, October 5, Wesleyan’s men’s soccer team beat the Augustana Vikings on the road.

After giving up an early goal, the Titans bounced back and scored twice in five minutes. Sophomore center back Justin Hart scored the first goal for IWU. The score was assisted by Gavin Smith.

Smith also scored the Titans’ second goal about 25 minutes into the game. This is Smith’s second straight game with a score, becoming a true offensive force for Wesleyan.

After Augustana tied the game up, senior center midfielder Dane Hoare scored a goal in the final seconds to put IWU ahead.

Wesleyan’s offense was able to put nine shots on goal against the Vikings, a vast improvement from their last game.

Sam Kedzior also had a solid outing, earning three saves on two goals allowed.

The Titans look to build off of their success against Augustana against Carroll University in their Senior Day game on Saturday, October 8. A win against the Pioneers would give Illinois Wesleyan an even record of 2-2 in the CCIW.

On Wednesday, October 12, the Titans will host the Millikin Big Blue in another conference matchup.
