IWU CAB events continue to rock on

IWU’s Campus Activities Board (CAB) have started the school year off with bang with their new roster of off campus excursions.

In past semesters, CAB became a student staple with on-campus events like Stuff-a-Plush and Arcade Night. This semester, they’ve branched out with events that get students out in the community.

To end off the first week of classes, CAB held their first excursion at the City of Bloomington’s Ice Center for open skate time. The event – like all of CAB’s opportunities – was free to students and transportation was also provided.

They followed up on Sept. 14 with one of their staple events held in Hansen Student: Glow Golf.

The event on their semester lineup that piqued my interest the most was the concert ticket giveaway to a Peach Pit show at ISU’s Braden Auditorium on Sept. 24. CAB’s campus wide email offered first-come first-serve tickets given out in pairs from 8:30 am to 4 pm in the Office of Student Involvement.

Because the email didn’t specify how many tickets were available, I contemplated waiting until 10 am to get tickets. Thankfully my paranoia won out and I was the second person in line at 8:25 am, because all twenty-four tickets sold out in the first thirty minutes.

Recipients were handed a pair of tickets inside a Ticketmaster envelope. Outside, a postcard asked students to tag CAB on Instagram to have their photos from the concert featured on the official page’s story.

The show itself was a success, with a nearly full audience. The Canadian Indie-Pop-Rock headliner was opened by Leah Marlene, a Normal, IL native who competed on season twenty of American Idol, finishing third place.

The crowd’s infectious energy permeated the room, with most of the crowd standing throughout the Peach Pit’s entire set. And to the parents in front of me with the 12-year-old daughter who looked at each other every time the lead singer swore, you knew what you were signing up for.

CAB’s most recent outing to Pheasant Lanes on Saturday, September 29 was also a success, with a couple dozen students joining the organization across town to bowl the night away.

The Campus Activities Board offers students fun, free activities that get them involved on and off campus. More students should take advantage of all they have to offer.

Keep an eye out for even more fun off-campus activities throughout the semester, including another ticket giveaway to a Taylor Swift tribute band.
