Illinois Wesleyan will feature creative and contemporary digital storybooks at Merwin and Wakeley Galleries at the Joyce Eichhorn Ames School of Art.
At Merwin Gallery, IWU Assistant Professor of Art Joshua Lowe’s “deLight: Digital Motion Storybooks” will display Lowe’s wood carving sculptures, interactive storytelling, and themes of traditional fables, such as community and morality.
Through the use of interactive sound and light, original stories by Lowe, such as “So Big, So Strong” and “A.W.: Artificial Wisdom.” will be displayed in the exhibition.
“He has literally created a giant digital book that immerses the viewer into its narrative,” said Carmen Lozar, director of Merwin and Wakeley Galleries.
Wakeley Gallery will feature Santiago Cal’s “Incomplete and an Earlier Version” exhibit. Cal is a professor of art in sculpture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his wood carving will explore the human figure.
“Although my sculptural practice encompasses a variety of media and subject matter, these two elements have been integral to my art making for over 30 years,” said Cal.
“Cal uses the age-old craft of wood carving to sculpt the figure,” said Lozar. “These emotional portraits lead the viewer to think about the individuals depicted and our own extraordinary journey,”
Both exhibits will be open to the public, and free for all ages, from Jan. 23 – March 1. A reception was held for both on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Wakeley and Merwin Galleries.
