Here’s a sentence I never thought I would have to say in public: the world and its people disappoint me. We are nearing the end of the 2024 presidential election and we still have Donald Trump in the running. And he’s gaining more supporters by the day.
Donald Trump is one of the worst presidents we have ever had, and it is surprising how he made it this far. I never thought I would see the twice-impeached former president come this far in the race. And I never thought I could be more disappointed in humanity than I already was.
Trump should not be president. He shouldn’t even be a candidate..
He was processed at a police station for rape charges and was found guilty. What did Trump do when he was found guilty? He defamed the woman who had won against him and faced a civil trial. Trump owes over $90 million to E. Jean Carroll in damages.
Over the summer, Trump was also convicted of 34 felonies.
And it’s not just about the woman who he defamed. There are a plethora of other comments throughout his career that mark him as a sexist man.
During the 2016 election, Trump ran against former secretary of state Hillary Clinton. In the presidential race, Trump dismissed her as “unbalanced” and “unhinged,” and questioned her “strength” and “stamina.”
In the 2024 primary race for Republican candidacy, Trump attacked his own former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley. He called the former South Carolina governor a “birdbrain.”
On October 28, Trump hosted a rally in Madison Square Garden with his allies. Unsurprisingly, they all talked more about the total domination of women than I have ever heard in my life. Speakers relentlessly belittled Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and women. One of the worst remarks was Trump’s statement that women were “so stupid.” Stephen Miller, Trump’s former White House advisor, said that women want men to take control and to ramp up their misogyny. If they do that, then their dating life will be “fantastic.”
The Trump campaign has to approve the program of speakers and their remarks before they set foot on stage. Trump let someone wearing a “Trump Not Tramp” shirt on stage while smiling and shaking their hand.
One look at any of Trump’s media appearances and debates and you can see how he belittles women who are in politics and journalism. The first time he ever spoke of a female presidential candidate was in a question about his previous donation over Hillary Clinton. In the first Republican primary debate of 2015, Trump said that he told Hillary Clinton to be at his wedding. He said that she attended because he gave to her campaign and was therefore indebted to him.
The former president has long deployed sexist and misogynistic attacks against his female rivals by commenting on their appearance and engaging in gendered stereotypes.
Trump is a man who wants to make America hegemonically masculine again—a country for men to dominate women with no repercussions. It will set back decades of progress women have made, going as far back to when women starved themselves in prison to advocate for a women’s right to vote.
Trump’s fuse is shorter than a match’s with the explosive power of a grenade. Do we really want someone like that in the highest office of this country?
Brent Eastwood, author of “American Psycho,” wrote a piece titled “Donald Trump’s Big Mouth Could Destroy Him.” He wrote, “The insults and negative terms documented were unbelievable.” He cited a New York Times list of Trump’s negativity on X, formerly Twitter, which documented posts from 2015 to 2021.
“The list is exhaustive and impossible to count,” Eastwood said.
At the same rally on October 28, Trump’s campaign faced the racist and anti-immigrant comments from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe used harmful stereotypes about Latinos to say they do not belong in the U.S.
Trump has yet to rebuff any of these comments. Instead, he chose that moment to shut his mouth, somehow doing the impossible. He actually shut his mouth. But, there could not be a worse moment to shut his mouth.
The racism and anti-immigrant rhetoric didn’t stop there. The comedian called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage.
Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance was left to handle the mess. He said that Americans should stop getting offended because he was “over it.”
Maybe you laughed, maybe you didn’t. I think the comments by Trump and his campaign are very telling as to the kind of people they are, and that is not the kind of person I want as my president.
