Disney Channel’s “Monstober,” an entire month of Halloween themed episodes and spooky original movies, is returning to the channel for the first time in eight years.
If you grew up in the mid-to-late 2000’s (which most people on this campus did), you most likely remember the excitement of October coming around, because it meant spooky episodes of tv shows like “Wizards of Waverly Place,” ‘Jessie”, “Ant Farm” and “Liv and Maddie” that had nothing to do with the weekly plot of the show.
“Monstober” also brought all of the spooky DCOM’s (Disney Channel Original Movies), like “Halloweentown,” “Twitches,” “Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire” and (my personal favorite) “Girl vs. Monster.”
We were also treated to fun musical moments. Let us not forget the absolute banger that is “Calling All the Monsters.”
It originally began in 2005 as “Hauntober,” then rebranded as “Wiz-Tober” to celebrate the first season of “Wizards of Waverly Place” in 2007. “Monstober” received its third and most well-known title to coincide with the premiere of “Girl vs. Monster” in 2012.
While Disney Channel has gone down overall in the past ten years, one of their biggest mistakes was doing away with “Monstober”. But fear not: “Monstober” is returning to our screens this Halloween season. With the premiere of the “Wizards of Waverly Place” spinoff just this Tuesday, what better time to revive this childhood staple than to commemorate its former namesake?
Senior MJ Soria looks back on the childhood staple with fondness. “I remember always watching the ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ and ‘Ant Farm’ Halloween episodes with my siblings,” Soria said. “On Halloween we always got home from school and watched whatever Halloween episodes were on before we went trick-or-treating. Now that we’re all adults, those memories are something that I always cherish.”
This “Monstober”’s lineup includes new shows like “Primos”, “Big City Greens”, “Zombies: The Re-animated Series” and “Kiff”, as well as Halloween staples like “Disney/Pixar’s Monsters, Inc.”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, “Halloweentown” and other “Monstober” classics.
