The Grammys red carpet looks failed high expectations

Nights out in Hollywood are always star-studded and have a crazy amount of media coverage. But one thing the public can always count on is that every celebrity will look amazing. Each year, designer outfits impress viewers, attendees and fashion critics, setting the bar higher for the next scheduled award show. Unfortunately the 2023 65th Annual Grammy Awards consisted of red carpet looks that failed to satisfy high expectations.

The night was full of celebrities in expensive outfits and every publication invited to the event arrived eager to create their own best dressed list. But for this year’s Grammys, creating a “worst dressed” list would be more appropriate.

Some musicians like Cardi B and Laverne Cox really understood the assignment. Cardi B wore a royal blue, structured gown that made its runway debut only five days prior to hitting the Grammys. Cox sported a black, curve fitting crocodile skin dress.

Celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo and Shania Twain fell short. Rodrigo wore a black, floor-length mesh gown that felt too safe and boring. Twain took the red carpet in a black and white polka-dot suit with a giant matching hat.

Another questionable piece was a full denim look worn by Miguel. It was an ill-fitting multi-layered denim outfit, complete with a hood. To make matters worse, even the boots were completely denim.

Taylor Swift, who could do no wrong, didn’t shock anyone with her long sleeve, bejeweled midnight blue two-piece gown. Another fan-favorite, Harry Styles, wore a patchwork style sparkly jumpsuit, which failed to excite due to his typical out-of-the-box outfits choices he often sports at his concerts and other red carpet events.

While some of the outfits were bad, most were just boring. For music’s biggest night, I have seen more interesting prom outfits.

Musician Charlotte Lawerence, wore a simple black strapless two-piece. Lawerence was not the only one in a basic black look, Amber Rose and Ella Mai were in different variations of the outfit as well.

Since most artists wanted to wear a simple black look, there is a way to do it right. Musician Anitta wore an extravagant, black strapless Versace gown. From the top to the bottom the leather and ruffled ensemble took all the attention on the carpet.

While most celebrities did not surprise anyone, some male celebrities were wearing things especially underwhelming.

Musician and producer Pharell Williams hit the carpet in a red, studded bomber jacket in matching bright pants. Williams completed the look with a black hat and rhinestone studded glasses.

Icon LL Cool J wore a classic jacket and pants look but the jacket had no buttons and just seemed to be secured internally. The look of the jacket was just off-putting and looked ill-fitting.

Rapper Jack Harlow also had a low for fashion. In a full-on beige suit, Harlow looked classic. He had to ruin the look by wearing leather gloves. The overall outfit was incredibly excessive in a negative way.

Hopefully the upcoming Oscars in March will be a promising night for film and fashion, until then, we’ll just have to settle for the dissatisfaction of the 2023 Grammys.
